What is human nature? This question has been asked since humanity existed. Psychology answers this question by examining the processes in which people interact with each other and with the physical and social environment. With this multifaceted perspective, psychology is the scientific study of behavioral, intellectual, and emotional processes. The scientific side of psychology requires that the results found be revealed by scientific methods. As a result of working with the scientific side of psychology and scientific research techniques, it is able to produce verifiable information and practical solutions beyond observation about the explanation of behavior.
PURPOSE OF THE PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENT
Samsun University Department of Psychology was established in 2018. Our department aims to train competent and innovative academicians and psychologists of the future by bringing together expert teaching staff in both academic and practical fields. It also considers the value of psychology in our age and its side that offers solutions to problems. In addition to teaching psychology, our university also offers infrastructure opportunities where students can practice and be a part of research and projects since their undergraduate years.
The department has two main goals with this purpose and infrastructure. One of them is to train psychologists who have basic knowledge in sub-branches of psychology such as clinical, developmental, social, cognitive, neuropsychology, statistics and industrial psychology and have decided what they want to do after graduation. The other is to educate graduate and doctoral students who are curious, innovative, have a philosophical background, can read the world literature, and thus make different and innovative contributions to the science of psychology from the local point of view.
In the psychology department, which was established with the aim of an education with international standards, one of the most basic motivations is to train graduates who can direct science. The main aim of our university and department is to raise graduates who know the ways of accessing information, being inquisitive, creative, and able to use imagination, are respectful to people and the environment, work in accordance with ethical values, and are productive and sensitive to social problems, in peace with their core values, far from a discriminatory point of view, with advanced communication skills, do scientific studies and contribute to scientific studies, think critically, are useful to their nation and humanity, have a sense of social responsibility and values of democracy.
THE PERIOD OF STUDY AND THE PROGRAMME
The period of study is 4 years. The program consists of psychology-based courses, elective psychology courses, and elective psychology complementary courses.
OCCUPATIONAL PROFILES OF GRADUATES AND ESSENTIAL PROFESSIONAL SKILLS
The students who successfully complete the program are awarded the “Undergraduate Degree in Psychology from Faculty of Economics, Administrative and Social Sciences, Samsun University”. The enormous variety of career paths that are available to our graduates. The graduates work with the title “Psychologist”. Our graduates may work in institutions affiliated to the Ministry of Health, schools, guidance – psychological counselling centres, private counselling centres, nursery schools, rest homes, private teaching institutions, mental health departments, sport psychology, relevant departments of public institutions, human resources departments of private institutions and health and psychology departments of military and security units.
